Planning Your Outdoor Kitchen? Here's Everything You Need to Think About First

Before you spend a single dollar, there are 10 crucial things every Sydney homeowner needs to consider when planning an outdoor kitchen. Get these right and you'll love it forever.

Planning Your Outdoor Kitchen? Here's Everything You Need to Think About First

So you've decided you want an outdoor kitchen. Congratulations — it's one of the best investments you can make in your home, your lifestyle, and your property value. But before the first cabinet gets installed, there's a planning phase that separates the outdoor kitchens people rave about from the ones that frustrate their owners for years.

We've built hundreds of outdoor kitchens across Sydney's Northern Beaches — Palm Beach, Avalon, Newport, Whale Beach, and beyond. Here's exactly what we tell every single client before we start designing.

1. How Do You Actually Entertain?

This is the most important question — and most people skip it.

Ask yourself:

  • Do you cook for 4 people most weekends, or 30 people a few times a year?
  • Are you a serious cook who wants professional-grade equipment, or is a solid BBQ and a bar fridge enough?
  • Do your guests stand around the kitchen while you cook, or do they sit at a separate table?

Your entertaining style drives everything — layout, size, appliance selection, and workflow. A kitchen designed for a serious home chef looks completely different to one built for casual Saturday afternoon drinks.

2. Think About Traffic Flow

An outdoor kitchen isn't just a cooking station — it's a social hub. Poor traffic flow ruins the experience.

  • Leave at least 900mm of clearance in front of appliances for comfortable movement
  • Keep the BBQ away from high-traffic walkways — no one wants to squeeze past a hot grill
  • Position the sink and fridge so you're not crossing the cooking zone to reach them
  • Think about where guests naturally congregate and design toward that, not away from it

The best outdoor kitchens feel effortless to work in. That's not luck — it's deliberate planning.

3. Sun, Wind, and Weather

Sydney's climate is a gift, but it still needs to be respected.

Sun: Afternoon shade is essential for Northern Beaches summers. A west-facing kitchen will be unbearably hot by 3pm. If you can't orientate away from the afternoon sun, factor in a pergola or shade sail from day one.

Wind: Prevailing sea breezes from the north-east are common across the Northern Beaches. If your BBQ smoke blows straight back into the entertaining area or into the house, you'll resent it every time you cook. Test wind direction at different times of day before finalising location.

Rain: Sydney gets significant rainfall. An uncovered outdoor kitchen will deteriorate faster and be unusable on wet days. A roof structure — even a simple pergola — dramatically extends the life of your kitchen and your enjoyment of it.

4. Services and Connections

This is where unexpected costs can blow a budget. Before you finalise your kitchen location, check:

  • Gas: Do you have a gas connection nearby? Running a new gas line adds cost. Where is your meter?
  • Water: Sink connection requires a cold water supply and a drain. How close is your nearest plumbing?
  • Power: Outdoor power points, lighting, and appliances like fridges and ice makers need weatherproof electrical circuits
  • Council: Some outdoor structures require a DA or at minimum a complying development certificate in NSW. Check with your local council

The closer your outdoor kitchen is to existing services, the lower your installation costs.

5. Materials Must Be Outdoor-Rated

This is where cutting corners costs you dearly. Outdoor kitchens on Sydney's Northern Beaches face:

  • Salt air corrosion — especially within 500m of the ocean
  • UV degradation — fading colours, warping materials
  • Moisture and humidity — swelling, mould, delamination
  • Temperature extremes — hot summers, cool winters

Not all cabinets marketed as "outdoor" are truly built for coastal Sydney conditions. Insist on marine-grade polymer or 316-grade stainless steel for cabinetry in coastal areas. For benchtops, porcelain (like Smartstone) and granite are among the most durable choices available.

A kitchen that looks incredible on day one but starts deteriorating in year two is a false economy.

6. Storage Is Always Underestimated

Every single client who has gone through this process wishes they'd planned for more storage.

Think about everything you need to store outdoors:

  • Cooking utensils, tongs, spatulas, brushes
  • Plates, bowls, glasses for outdoor entertaining
  • Condiments, oils, spices
  • Cleaning products
  • Outdoor cushions and accessories
  • Gas bottles
  • Spare towels and napkins

Deep drawers, pull-out shelves, and dedicated bin compartments make your outdoor kitchen genuinely functional — not just beautiful.

7. Lighting Is Non-Negotiable

Sydney summer evenings are magic. Don't ruin them with bad lighting.

You need at least three layers:

  1. Task lighting — bright, directed light over the cooking and prep area so you can safely see what you're doing. Under-cabinet LED strips are perfect for this.
  2. Ambient lighting — softer, warmer light to create atmosphere. Pendant lights, downlights on dimmers, or festoon lights above the entertaining area.
  3. Safety lighting — steps, paths, and edges should be clearly lit to prevent trips and falls at night.

Plan your lighting during the design phase, not as an afterthought. It's far cheaper to run conduit before installation than to retrofit it later.

8. Appliances: Want vs. Need

Appliance selection is exciting — and it's easy to go overboard. Our advice: start with what you genuinely need, and leave provision (plumbing, electrical, space) for what you might want later.

Essentials for most households:

  • Quality BBQ/grill (sized for your typical cook)
  • Sink with cold water
  • Outdoor refrigerator

Great additions if budget allows:

  • Side burner or wok burner
  • Pizza oven
  • Ice maker
  • Outdoor dishwasher
  • Beer tap

Leave physical space and rough-in connections for future appliances. It costs very little to do during construction and saves thousands later.

9. Think About Long-Term Maintenance

A beautiful outdoor kitchen needs to stay beautiful. Before you commit to any material or finish, ask: how easy is this to maintain?

  • High-gloss doors show fingerprints and water marks easily
  • Concrete benchtops need annual sealing
  • Timber elements need regular oiling or staining
  • Stainless steel shows scratches over time but cleans up well
  • Porcelain benchtops are the lowest maintenance option available

Be honest about how much time you'll realistically spend on maintenance. For most busy Northern Beaches families, low-maintenance materials are worth every extra dollar.

10. Use a Designer Who Specialises in Outdoor Kitchens

Outdoor kitchens are not indoor kitchens moved outside. They have completely different structural, material, and engineering requirements. Working with a specialist — rather than a general builder or cabinet maker — means:

  • You get designs that account for outdoor-specific constraints from the start
  • Material recommendations are based on proven real-world performance
  • Appliance integration is properly engineered
  • The finished result will look and function exactly as designed
